And by taking many different measurements across Greenland, researchers can build up a picture of how much ice is being lost over time. It’s not, because Fettweis’s estimates don’t account for ice breaking off from the sheet to form icebergs where Greenland’s glaciers meet the sea. Factor in that process, and the Greenland ice sheet is clearly shrinking with global warming.
